it depends on what kind of action your going to perform with the class your creating, if your rushing you want good mobility but also good power, and also extra health to take a beating on the front lines. if your going to be sneaking around and surprising the enemy you again want good mobility a silenced weapon and some way to set up booby traps.
most people will say that some set up with an assault rifle(m16, M4, AK) and tripple frag, stoping power, and penetration is pretty text book stuff.
I just run around with a shotgun with grip, martydom, and added health...just sprint every and shoot people in the back of the head...hilarious, the game is so easy
I like the UAV jammer. So if your sniping people actually have to find you instead of seeing you on their radar.
Different classes will suit different maps better....for instance, for enclosed/smaller maps I use:P903x FragsSonic BoomMartyrdomReason: The P90 is a bullet hose so its perfect for smaller maps, 3x frags and martyrdom coupled with sonic doom means your frags have a bigger blast radius so its harder for someone to run away from your dropped grenade after you die plus your regular frags will be hard to escape also.
I'll mostly use an assault rifle (G36c) with a single shot gun (G3 w silencer) with claymore and matyrdom.
COD4 is fairly well balanced so there is no one BEST setup that everyone can use.I would say one of the biggest factors is your accuracy. If you aren't very accurate go for weapons that spray bullets and have high damage. Couple that up with stopping power and penetration and you will drop enemies quickly.If your accuracy is better then you can go for more precise weapons that do less damage per bullet, and switch out some of the perks to give you different benefits.
i agree the game is pretty balanced and rewards you for using different weapons for a given situation. On close quarter maps like ''Vacant'' shotguns and SMG's are extremely effective but on larger maps like ''Overgrown'' and ''Pipeline'' Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles are very dominant. LMG's are effective anywhere you can find a bottleneck or choke point where you can set up and unleash hell. Almost anyone will tell you the M16 is overpowered or the best weapon but it depends on your style of play. I think the RPD is far more devastating than the M16.
With how much people rely on the UAV, I honestly feel UAV jammer along with a silenced weapon is amazing. I usually do that, plus martyrdom and 3x Frag. I just switch the gun depending on mood. works incredibly well.
I like the MP5 silenced with x3 frags, UAV jammer and deeper penetration. Another setup is completely overkill with the Barrett .50 cal, the M16 silenced, x3 frags, overkill, and martyrdom lol.
There is no solid answer to this question, it all really depends upon the map.
i usually use a sniper variant. r700 and p90 with the overkill perk, claymorex2 and steady aim.

no way dude...the best M16 setup(what i mostly use) is this:M16 with red dot sightdeep impactbullet penetration...that **** rapes...and for MP5 i use the silencer and UAV jammer and martyrdom...3 frags...i always use 3 frags on every class, so ****
I love using:AK-47 or G36c with Red Dot or sometimes silencerAs far as perks go i always use:frag x3 - Great for comg up against a **** load of guys Stopping Power - makes the gun more powerful and who wouldnt want that... lol
